Getting to Flemington Racecourse
Flemington sits about 6km north-west of the CBD. Off-peak the run is 15 minutes; on Cup Day, with Epsom Road and Smithfield Road under event traffic control, allow 30–40 minutes from the city and leave earlier than you think you need to. Gates open well before the first race and the roads tighten from mid-morning.
Drop-offs are directed to the designated rank near the Racecourse Road entrances. From the western suburbs — Footscray, Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds, Kensington — the trip is short and often faster than public transport once trains fill up.
The public holiday tariff, explained honestly
Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday across metropolitan Melbourne, which means the higher published Victorian tariff band applies. This is a fixed rate set in advance — it is not a surge multiplier and it does not climb as demand rises.
That difference matters most on the way home. Rideshare multipliers of 2x or more are routine when 80,000 people leave Flemington within an hour. A fixed-price taxi quote you agreed in the morning still costs the same amount at 6pm.
Getting home after the last race
Book your return leg at the same time as your outbound trip and pick a meeting point slightly away from the main gates — the Racecourse Road end, Epsom Road, or Ascot Vale Station all clear far faster than the racecourse forecourt.
If your group has been drinking, tell us the passenger count when booking so we send the right number of cars. We take card, EFTPOS and cash, so nobody needs to sort out an app at the end of the day.
The rest of the Carnival
Derby Day, Oaks Day and Stakes Day run on the Saturday, Thursday and following Saturday. Those days are not public holidays, so standard day and night tariffs apply, but the traffic patterns around Flemington are the same.
Corporate marquee guests and hospitality groups can book multiple cars on account with a compliant tax receipt issued on the spot.
