How it works

What goes into a Melbourne taxi fare.

A metered Victorian taxi fare is made up of four parts: the flagfall you pay the moment the trip starts, a distance charge per kilometre, a waiting charge that ticks over when the cab is stopped or moving slowly, and any extras such as tolls, the airport rank fee and card surcharge. Which flagfall and per-kilometre rate applies depends entirely on the day and time of your trip.

Day tariff

Mon–Fri, 9:00am – 5:00pm

The standard rate. Flagfall plus a per-kilometre charge, with a waiting rate applied when the cab is stopped or crawling in traffic.

Peak tariff

Mon–Fri, 5:00pm – 9:00am and all weekend

Covers commuter peaks, evenings and weekends. Higher flagfall and per-kilometre rate than the day tariff.

Night / late-night tariff

Fri & Sat, midnight – 6:00am

The highest tariff band, applied to late-night pickups. A prepayment may be requested between 10pm and 5am.

Extras & surcharges

Where applicable

Melbourne Airport rank fee, CityLink and EastLink tolls, booking fee and card surcharge are added to the metered amount.
