Australian Grand Prix

Taxi to the Grand Prix
at Albert Park.

Albert Park is ringed by road closures for the Australian Grand Prix, and the streets around it are the busiest they get all year. Pre-book a fixed price, pick the right gate, and you will be inside while everyone else is still queuing on Queens Road.

Which gate to be dropped at

Albert Park has several entrances and the right one depends on your ticket. Gate 1 and Gate 2 sit on the Lakeside Drive side, closest to the main straight and grandstands. Gate 5 and Gate 10 are on the Aughtie Drive and Fitzroy Street sides, better for the St Kilda end and the lakeside general admission areas.

Tell your driver the gate number when you book. During the event weekend, Lakeside Drive, Aughtie Drive and Canterbury Road are closed to through traffic, so the approach changes entirely from a normal day.

Traffic and timing across the weekend

Practice on Thursday and Friday is manageable. Qualifying Saturday and race Sunday are not — the area from South Melbourne through Albert Park to St Kilda slows to a crawl from mid-morning. From the CBD, a 10-minute trip becomes 30 or more.

Leaving is worse than arriving. Crowds exit within a tight window and every access road is one-way controlled. Pre-book your return and agree a pickup point a few blocks clear of the circuit — Kerferd Road, Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, or Clarendon Street in South Melbourne all work well.

Airport and hotel transfers over the GP weekend

Melbourne Airport to Albert Park is typically 30–40 minutes, longer on race day. Give us your flight number and arrivals are tracked automatically, with generous free waiting time built in.

Southbank, Docklands, South Yarra and St Kilda hotels are all short runs to the circuit. If you are staying in the CBD, allow double your usual travel time on Saturday and Sunday.

Fixed price versus meter on event days

Event weekends are exactly when a fixed price earns its keep. A metered fare climbs while the car sits in event traffic; a fixed price you agreed beforehand does not, no matter how long the closures hold you up.

Victorian taxi tariffs are published rates, so there is no demand multiplier when the race finishes. Use the fare calculator for both figures on your exact addresses before you decide.
